Cybersecurity for Law Firms in Ontario, Built to Protect Client Privilege
ACT360 protects Ontario law firms with 24/7 threat monitoring, endpoint and Microsoft 365 identity protection, email filtering, staff phishing training and tested backups, all documented so you can answer LAWPRO, clients and auditors.
It’s the security layer of our IT support for Ontario law firms, built on the same cybersecurity services we run for businesses across the province.
What Does Cybersecurity Look Like for a Law Firm?
Cybersecurity for a law firm means protecting privileged files, client money and the email accounts that move both. It combines monitoring, identity and device protection, staff training and tested backups, with controls documented for insurers and clients.
Law firms are attractive targets for a simple reason. They hold confidential information and they move money, often on deadline. A real estate closing or a settlement payout is exactly the moment an attacker wants to slip in a changed bank account number.
The risk isn’t limited to large firms. Statistics Canada reports that about 1 in 6 Canadian businesses were impacted by cyber security incidents in 2023, and that businesses spent $1.2 billion recovering from them. A 12-person practice has the same privileged files as a national firm, and usually far less protection around them.
Which Threats Hit Ontario Law Firms Hardest?
Payment fraud through compromised email, impersonation of IT staff, ransomware and old accounts that still have access cause most of the damage. Each one is preventable with the right mix of controls and habits.
- Altered payment instructions. LAWPRO’s June 2026 scams and cons list includes altered bank account numbers in payment instructions, fake wire instructions and hacked accounts used to send convincing requests.
- IT help desk impersonation. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s May 2026 alert AL26-010 warns of callers posing as internal IT staff to get MFA reset or approved, then exporting data from cloud email and document storage.
- Ransomware. Encrypted client files with a deadline attached, and backups that turn out to be untested.
- Access nobody removed. A former clerk or contractor whose account still works in the document system.
Notice that most of these don’t need malware at all. They need one person to trust the wrong email or the wrong phone call, which is why training and identity monitoring matter as much as antivirus.
What’s Included in ACT360 Cybersecurity for Law Firms
Layered protection drawn from our cybersecurity service, sized to a firm of 15 to 80 people.
24/7 Monitoring and Response
Round-the-clock monitoring, real-time detection and containment of suspicious activity.
Endpoint and Identity Protection
EDR on every device, plus Microsoft 365 identity protection for impossible travel and unusual sign-ins.
Email Filtering and Training
Anti-spam and email threat protection, phishing simulations and security awareness training.
Tested Backup and Recovery
Client files backed up off-site and restored in testing, so ransomware isn’t the end of the story.
Antivirus Only vs. ACT360 Cybersecurity for a Law Firm
Here’s how the same incidents play out with basic protection and with layered security.

Does Cybersecurity Affect a Firm’s LAWPRO Coverage?
It can. LAWPRO’s 2027 program lets social engineering coverage rise from $250,000 to $1,000,000 when specified risk controls in Endorsement 14 are met, so your security setup now helps decide your limit.
LAWPRO’s 2027 program announcement also adds first-party cyber coverage with a $250,000 sublimit. The control list sits in the endorsement itself, so confirm it with LAWPRO. Once you have it, we’ll document where your firm stands against each control.
Security and Law Firm Work ACT360 Has Delivered
What Does Cybersecurity Cost for a Law Firm?
Security fundamentals are included in ACT360 Managed IT at $80 to $150 CAD per user per month. Extra layers such as SIEM log monitoring are quoted after a security assessment.
- Endpoint protection, email filtering and access controls are part of the Managed IT fee.
- SIEM monitoring uses smart filtering to keep log volumes, and costs, predictable.
- Microsoft 365 licensing is billed separately.
Our guide to how much IT support costs a law firm breaks the Managed IT fee down by firm size.

What Law Firms Ask About Cybersecurity
Microsoft 365 can be secured well for a law firm, but how it’s configured matters more than the licence. We add multi-factor authentication for every account, identity protection that flags impossible travel and unusual sign-ins, and email filtering in front of the mailbox. Then we keep a backup of your data outside Microsoft, because the cloud service alone isn’t a recovery plan.
Verify every change to payment instructions by phone, using a number you already have on file, never one from the email. LAWPRO’s June 2026 scams list includes altered bank account numbers and fake wire instructions sent from compromised accounts. Our side is email filtering, MFA, identity monitoring and staff training, so those messages are harder to send and easier to spot.
When someone clicks a phishing link, we contain it first. Endpoint detection can isolate the device, identity monitoring watches for the account being used from somewhere unusual, and we reset credentials and review what was touched. Then we tell you plainly what happened, so you can decide whether there’s a reporting obligation.
Security fundamentals, including endpoint protection, email filtering and access controls, are part of ACT360 Managed IT at $80 to $150 CAD per user per month. Additional layers such as SIEM log monitoring are scoped after a security assessment, based on your users, devices and compliance needs.
It shouldn’t, and if it does, something’s configured wrong. Most of the protection runs in the background, and we fit controls like MFA and conditional access to how your lawyers actually work, including from court and home.
Start with the free IT Readiness Assessment. In about 30 minutes we look at your Microsoft 365 setup, devices, backups and how payments are verified, and you get a written summary of the gaps. There’s no obligation.
