Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery in Simcoe County, Planned for Outages Longer Than a Day
ACT360 builds business continuity and disaster recovery plans for Simcoe County businesses: tested backups, documented recovery steps, and a way for staff to keep working when the office, the power or a server is out for days.
Most continuity plans quietly assume the lights come back on by tomorrow. In spring 2025 parts of the county learned that isn’t guaranteed. ACT360 plans for the longer outage as part of our business continuity and disaster recovery services.
What Did the March 2025 Ice Storm Teach Simcoe County Businesses About Continuity?
That an outage can last more than a week. A continuity plan has to answer where people work, how they reach their files and what gets restored first when the building is dark for days, not hours.
Freezing rain started on the evening of March 28, 2025. Oro-Medonte declared an emergency on March 30, and the City of Orillia declared one as well. In its update to council, the township noted Hydro One called it the worst storm Ontario had seen since 1998, with over a million people losing power. Oro-Medonte ran its municipal water systems on backup generators from March 28 to April 4, and power wasn’t back in most areas until April 9.
Across the province, The Weather Network reported more than 2,300 broken poles, and over 38,000 customers were still without power on April 7. For a business running everything from a server in the office, that’s ten days of no files, no accounting system and no email unless something was set up in advance.
Weather is only one cause. Ransomware, a failed server and a deleted folder all end the same way if the backup was never tested. Our guide on why businesses skip disaster recovery testing covers the most common gaps we find.
What’s Included in ACT360 Business Continuity in Simcoe County
Designed around what your business would actually lose in a week without the office.
Risk and Impact Review
We rank your systems by how long the business can live without each one, so recovery happens in the right order.
Off-Site and Cloud Backup
Copies of your data kept away from the office, so a dark building or a failed server doesn’t take the backup with it.
Scheduled Restore Testing
Backups are restored on a schedule and the results documented, because an untested backup is a guess.
Written Recovery Plan
Who does what, in what order, with contact lists and access details your team can follow under pressure.
Hoping for the Best vs. Basic Backup vs. an ACT360 Continuity Plan
Here’s how the three most common setups we find in Simcoe County hold up during a multi-day outage.
What Does Business Continuity Planning Cost in Simcoe County?
ACT360 prices continuity and disaster recovery in writing after the free IT Readiness Assessment. Cost depends on how much data you hold, how quickly each system must come back, and how many locations need covering.
The honest comparison isn’t the cost of a plan against zero. It’s the cost of a plan against a week without your systems. ACT360’s own published figures put average ransomware recovery at around $200,000. Most continuity work costs a small fraction of that.
- Amount of data and how often it changes
- Recovery time each system needs, in hours or days
- Number of offices and remote staff
- Whether ACT360 already manages your IT
Backup monitoring and testing are part of Managed IT services in Simcoe County, which run $80 to $150 CAD per user per month. Our post on how often you should test your backups is a good place to start.
Our Approach
A.C.T.I.O.N.
For continuity work in Simcoe County, ACTION starts by asking the question most plans skip: if the office were dark for ten days, what would the business actually need on day one?
Assess
We find out what you back up, where it lives and when it was last restored, before recommending anything.
Comprehend
We dig into why things are set up the way they are and where the business is headed over the next 2 to 5 years.
Tailor
The recommendation is built from what we learned, with specific reasoning, cost, and what we’re deliberately not recommending yet.
Implement
Backups and cloud access go in alongside your current setup, then get tested before anything old is retired.
Optimize
Quarterly reviews cover business outcomes, not ticket counts, and bring recommendations you didn’t have to ask for.
Nurture
We build relationships with your whole team, not just the owner, so every conversation starts with context.
How ACT360 Keeps Continuity Work Low-Risk in Simcoe County
Financial
Continuity work is scoped in writing after the assessment. The 90-day exit clause applies to Managed IT agreements, not standalone continuity projects.
Switching
New backups run beside your existing ones until they’ve been restored successfully.
Political
The recovery plan is written in plain language for owners, insurers and auditors.
Operational
A named contact who knows your recovery order and will lead the restore if it’s needed.
Ownership
Your backups, recovery documents and credentials stay under your control.

Give the 360° Solution
Our goal is to give our clients the full solution, so your technology becomes a profit enhancer rather than a profit hindrance. That’s why we offer more than a service desk or IT support. We bring a vCIO, IT strategy, and process improvement to the table.
Be a Problem Solver
We look beyond the problem to find its actual source so we can resolve it. When we work with your team and any vendors, we make sure every issue at hand is fully addressed.
Always Looking Forward
We strive to deal with our mistakes as a team, learn from them, fix them, and then not look back and repeat them. We also aim to provide proactive and forward-facing solutions by identifying issues as soon as they’re spotted.
Working to Live, Not Living to Work
We want our employees to feel supported to take care of family and personal needs. So we believe in creating a flexible, asynchronous, and remote-friendly workplace, as long as the work is getting done well and on time, then we are satisfied.
Treating Employees Like Experts
We believe our employees are experts who can be trusted to own their work and feel empowered to improve results. So we trust our experts to create solutions in efficient ways that work for them and to seek continual improvement, for the company and for others.
What Simcoe County Businesses Ask About Disaster Recovery
Disaster recovery is getting systems and data back after something fails. Business continuity is keeping the business running while that happens, including where staff work and how they reach customers.
Usually not. A drive in the same office can be lost to the same fire, flood or ransomware, and most have never been test-restored. An off-site, tested copy is what makes a backup useful.
That depends on what was agreed in the plan. Critical systems can often be reachable from the cloud the same day, while full restores of large servers take longer. Recovery targets are set per system during planning.
We test them. Restores are run on a schedule and the results written down, so you know the backup works before you need it.
Yes. A documented plan with tested backups answers most cyber insurance questions on this topic, and we can help you fill in the questionnaire accurately.
It depends on data volume, recovery speed and locations, so it’s quoted in writing after the free assessment. For Managed IT clients, backup monitoring and testing are part of the monthly fee of $80 to $150 CAD per user.
